A week in social media – Monday

Monday

Today I focused on emails; messenger and face time basically anything that involves conversations (connecting with people)

Every morning I check my emails, usually for a phone bill, teacher information, work roster and pay slips, sales on clothing. I then check my messenger, it’s one of the biggest ways I message people now, because it’s free if I find Wi-Fi somewhere and doesn’t use up too much data. Also when they introduced the face timing it made it really easy for me to connect with my overseas friends and the quality has come a long way since Skype. I connected with my best friend who is living in Exmouth, WA and my good friend who was in New Zealand at this time. The great thing about messenger is that while we are talking we can be sending each other funny, interactive pictures if we cannot face time and I usually save them to bring up at another time. I really enjoy the way I can connect with my friends on messenger, it’s faster than messaging through sms, you can privately share videos or posts and you can send pictures and emojis. The negative side to messenger is this concept of “seen” it enables you to see if someone has read your message and when they read it. It’s a little confronting for some because people don’t reply and then post a status and it’s builds this idea of dishonesty. Today I replied to 4 of my friends messages, late of course but luckily they were not seen because I chose to wait to open them until I could respond. I face-timed my best friend which was really awesome because she is away. I love Face-timing my close friends because they can see the funny faces I pull but if I Facetime my partner I’m usually more attentive on how i look because I like to look good, usually because we only get to talk a little a week because we live far away from each other at the moment, it’s the new dynamic to a relationship, when you are doing long distance. I use my Iphone because the quality is fairly good and I can walk around with it.

A week in social media – Sunday

Sunday

I wanted to focus on Spotify, Spotify is not my favourite way of playing music because it’s hard to be introduced to any new music that hasn’t been chosen for you. For example if I listen to a few rap songs it really focuses on just other rap songs, usually quiet mainstream ones. I have to really search and find music whereas a few other outlets like PURR and sound cloud have lots of new and creative music that hasn’t been signed or put onto Spotify and it’s a lot easier to get. However it is easy to access and use. I wake up and put it on, I catch the tram or train listening to Spotify. I have a few playlists that I have made myself which are pretty mellow and small and the rest I listen to is called daily mix, usually 3-4 different playlists relating to music I’ve already listened to or that is in the same genre.

A week in social media – Saturday

There is a consistency with the applications I use on social media.
Saturday
Today I want to focus on Instagram, Instagram for me is my favourite tool to use to explore other peoples creativity, lifestyle, places to eat, friends I might know, places I might want to visit and it also allows me to edit my photos to look however I want them to and post them, it gives people an idea of what I am all about and how I see my life, it’s a modern way of attracting people, getting people involved in your life from a distance. i have two accounts, a personal account, more about documenting my travel experiences, my dogs, my friends and family and the other account is my design account, showcasing my work and hopefully will eventually be used to promote and advertise my work. I would spend a majority of time editing photos and keeping them in my drafts section of Instagram in case I want to use them but I give myself a window because I don’t like posting videos or pictures that aren’t relevant to what I’m doing now, sometimes I find Instagram a bit overwhelming when people post being overseas but really they are in your neighbourhood. I always thought insta – represented instant but obviously it just means instantly uploading a video of anything, anytime, the instant likes and viewers. Today I looked in my search area to see what was recommended for me to look at and I liked maybe 3-4 posts about sharks in the ocean, artwork and tattoo designs. My Instagram is public, people can see what I have liked and see what I am up to by watching ‘my story’ which I do a lot of. I notice more now how in tune with my personality, my Instagram accounts are. The more I like things, for example today I liked my friends picture, it then responded by connecting me to photos of people that my friends know so that I could then engage by liking or adding them as a friend. It began to create this online persona, what I like, eventually feeds in to who I know and get connected with.

My discipline is Communication design and a huge part of creating our identity and authenticity is for us place our works under copyright and vice versa when creating designs that use other peoples works. It is our job to respect the information we are using to create an identity for our own blog entries.
I sourced through a website, photographs that were able to be used without a licensing  needed and the basic acknowledgement, creative commons of naming the photographer (amateur) . Once downloaded it then gives the option of paying for a coffee – a donation if you feel that it is necessary.

social interaction with media – day one

Day one

It’s a daily ritual of waking up, phone on my side table, grab my phone, scroll, like, read, learn and get up to speed with what I have missed in 12 hours. Phone is usually on silent mode with no vibrate so I can get a good sleep that night, however in the middle of the night I leave my phone up the wrong way and the light to notify me of something will wake me up and usually I ignore it or I’ll wake up specifically to find out what it was.

Usually it goes in a sequence of Facebook, messenger, Instagram, emails and snapchat. I don’t interact at this stage by liking anything or commenting, it’s usually just looking at photos or videos to see if anything new has come up since yesterday.

I’m an avid starter of things and never finish “those” things, I create videos that I never publish in iMovie or my go pro editing, I save pictures to upload on Instagram in my drafts section, I write posts in my notes to put on Facebook. I’m always conscious of what I want to post and when I want to post it in order to represent myself as best as possible.

Today I looked at a pretty average daily routine. nothing specific as I just wanted to gage how much I use on a daily basis. I scroll a lot, my emails, on Facebook, Spotify etc; I tend to see a lot of the same thing over and over again and this ads to the mundane, routine. Something I notice I do a lot is check my phone very late at night and wake up to almost see exactly the same information. It can be quiet funny because something I like very late at night when I’m tired, seems funny or interesting and then I check my ‘activity log’ and realise it was not overly funny or interesting, I was just sleep deprived. I notice that a lot of what I like contributes to the connections with all the facets of social media I use. I can see a photo in 3 different spaces, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook if it’s been a hot topic of the day. There really isn’t any excuse to not know what is currently going on in the world if you’re an avid Facebook user. Today I also noticed that advertisements were being related to posts and images I have liked which I found incredibly confronting, I had never really noticed it because I’m so used to ignoring them. For example there was a “slim-waste” top that I could buy that I think was advertised because I “liked” a gym page and a smoothie recipe but I could be totally coincidental.

Over the next week I will document how I interact and what I used involving media.
